Ship's basic knowledge mainly includes ship's structure, ship's tonnage and ship's load line. Ship's structure contains shell, frame, deck, holds, tanks and super structure.
Ship's tonnage is the size of the ship unit, which contains two kinds of tonnage, weight tonnage and registered tonnage. Weight tonnage can be divided into displacement tonnage and deadweight tonnage; displacement tonnage is the tonnage when ship immerse into water and displace water's tonnage ,and it's also the weight of the itself . Deadweight tonnage ( DWT) reflect the ship's load capacity. Registered tonnage is the unit of vessel volume, also called registered tons, a unit for tonnage calculation for all state's ship registration regulations, with 100 cubic feet, which is 2. 83 cubic meters as a registered tons.
The ship's load line means the maximum water line when the ship is full loaded.
Ship's nationality indicates which country a ship is registered. The owners of the ship need to do all the ship registration in domestic or foreign relevant administrative department and gain the local country or registration country's nationality certificate.
Ship's flag refers to the national flag which is hanged on the business ship during the voyage. Flag of convenience is a ship which has the foreign registration, and hangs the foreign flag when operating.
Ship's classification specifies the ship registered gross tons above 100, whose manufacture must be under the supervision of a classification society or the ship inspection institutions supervision ； classification shows the technical state of the ship. Classification certificate may contain the main technical performance and the classification symbol of the ship. Ship's classification ensures the safety of ship's operation, convenient for the charterer and the shipper to choose proper vessel, satisg the needs of the import, export goods transport and determine insurance premium to insurance companies.
Ship's speed describes with "knot". Different ship have different speed, in which dry bulk and tanker ship's speed are usually between 13 ~ 17kn and container ships are about 24. 5 kt.
Ship's document contains the name of various files, such as ownership proof , operating performance ,technological conditions and essential condition for operation.
